Influence of Corrosion on the Service Performance of Steel Box Girder Bridge Decks

    • The stress distribution of steel box girder deck under uniaxial load was calculated by finite element method, the corrosion thinning of the in-service bridge deck was measured, the tensile properties and fatigue properties were tested, and the effect of corrosion degree on the service performance of steel box girder was studied. The results showed that the maximum stress of the bridge deck appeared at the top of the U-rib under the uniaxial load (13 t) of a heavy vehicle, and the maximum transverse tensile stress and maximum compressive stress were 111.6 MPa and 118 MPa, respectively. The equivalent tensile strength of the bridge deck specimens with different corrosion degrees decreased approximately linearly with the reduction of the remaining thickness. Under the condition of equivalent stress amplitude of 115 MPa, the fatigue life of the bridge slab specimen was greatly reduced as the remaining thickness decreased. To ensure the safety of the bridge, the remaining thickness of the bridge slab should not be less than 10 mm.
