Cracking Causes of the Burner Made of Inconel 600 in a Gasifier

    • The cracking causes of the burner head made of Inconel600 in a gasifier were analyzed by macroscopic examination, Vickers hardness testing, metallographic examination, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The results showed that sulfur as an impurity in the pulverized coal transformed into the gaseous sulfide at high temperature, which induced the nickel-base superalloy of the burner head to suffer sulfur-corrosion preferentially. The microcracks caused by the high-temperature sulfur-corrosion further expanded with the increase of the thermal stress during the gasifier start and stop, and the burner head cracked at last.
