Abstract
The mechanisms and control methods of three microbiological induced corrosion (MIC) systems, including “aqueous solution-metal”, “petroleum (containing water)-metal”, and “aqueous solution-concrete”, are reviewed with the focus on the corrosion processes of metal or concrete attacked by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in different systems. Additionally, the influencing factors on MIC such as pH value, dissolved oxygen, certain ions in solutions, biological film and interaction between bacteria are discussed. The control methods for MIC in these three distinct systems are also introduced.
