Abstract
The influence of nitrogen on the damping capacity of Fe-14.1Mn and Fe-16.5Mn alloys was studied using amplitude-dependent internal friction technique. The effect of nitrogen on phase constitution, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance was investigated. The Fe-14.1Mn alloy possessed a much higher level of damping capacity than the Fe-16.5Mn alloy. The addition of approximately 0.2 wt.% of nitrogen slightly affected the damping capacity of the Fe-14.1Mn alloy and increased the damping capacity in the Fe-16.5Mn alloy. The more austenite converted to martensite, the better damping capacity was obtained after heat treatment. The corrosion resistance of both alloys in 1mol/L sulphuric acid solution was improved by more than two times due to nitrogen alloying.
